Identify flexible SOOW and junior-service SJOOW from type and jacket print.
Checkable specification fields
These are examples from the named references, not assertions about a reel you have not shown us. Match the actual jacket, tag and part number before using a product claim.
| Field | Documented example / boundary | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Service-class code | IEWC lists S as 600 V severe service and SJ as 300 V junior service; use the actual print for a lot. | [1] |
| OO and W codes | IEWC describes OO as oil-resistant insulation and jacket and W as weather resistance. | [1] |
| Southwire example | Its Royal SOOW construction has Class K stranded copper, EPDM insulation and a CPE jacket, with product-specific temperature and packaging data. | [2] |
| Packaging is not footage | Southwire offers multiple original put-ups; no original packaging option proves an opened reel’s current length. | [2] |
Identify the type before its condition
IEWC’s designation guide distinguishes SOOW from SJOOW, but a printed code alone does not prove a particular surplus coil has stayed dry, intact or within an original length. Photograph the full jacket legend at several points and match the exact maker and conductor count to a data sheet.
- Record SOOW, SJOOW, SO or another complete designation verbatim.
- Record AWG, number of conductors, jacket type and both cable ends.
- Disclose cuts, flattening, cracking, abrasion and unreadable print as observed.
Measure or qualify a length claim
An original factory put-up, jacket sequence and present remaining footage may all be different numbers. Report which figure is on the tag and which was measured. A seller should not convert an old tolerance or manufacturer nominal specification into a guaranteed saleable length.
- Use a tagged, measured or estimated length label with its date or method.
- No photograph or this guide establishes current electrical integrity or acceptance.
Source notes and scope
The linked references support the specific examples above. Product designs and standards can change; seller-supplied markings, measured length and current condition require separate verification. Nothing here states that this buyer stocks, tests, guarantees or accepts a particular cable, or offers installation advice.
