CITY-SPECIFIC SELLER GUIDE / TEXAS

AUSTIN CABLE: UTILITY & SOLAR LOT RECORDS

Austin Energy's published construction and solar documents show why 'utility wire' or 'solar cable' is not enough to identify a reel. The right questions are material, conductor arrangement, voltage class, marking and whether the stock was installed or merely left unused. Austin Energy's service area is not identical to every Austin mailing address; the examples here apply only when the lot actually relates to the stated project type.

01 / SOURCE-BACKED QUESTION

Which conductor did the project specify?

Austin Energy's 1208 Conductor sheet distinguishes aluminum ACSR/AAC, copper, insulated 5 kV and 15 kV, duplex, triplex and quadruplex assemblies through distinct material references and IDs. Its Distribution Construction Standards are internal utility construction references, not a blanket approval of someone else's resale stock; the public standards page expressly excludes downtown network standards.

For a seller: For a utility-construction overrun, transcribe the reel and jacket identification, any visible utility material number, conductor metal, AWG/kcmil, phase arrangement, insulation and voltage class. Keep 15-kV cable separate from low-voltage service triplex; photograph exposed ends and any caps. Do not claim that a cable is approved for Austin Energy work unless the current utility and project verify it.

02 / SOURCE-BACKED QUESTION

Are solar or storage markings supported by records?

Austin Energy's March 2025 distributed-generation interconnection guide requires equipment to be UL listed and rated for system voltage and current in the installations it governs; it also specifies grounding-conductor detail for those designs. That source addresses a compliant project, not whether an uninspected leftover reel has a current listing or can be installed on a different system.

For a seller: If a seller calls the surplus 'PV cable,' provide legible listing and jacket marks, conductor size and material, insulation and voltage rating, manufacturer product data and the distinction between never-installed stock and removed wire. A buyer's engineer must check the intended design; do not turn a general utility specification into a claim about an individual reel.

03 / SOURCE-BACKED QUESTION

Was wiring installed for a future solar system?

Austin Energy states that solar systems installed in its service area must pass a final solar inspection before energization. Its inspection guidance separately identifies a pre-wire final inspection when wiring is installed for a future solar system, often in new building construction, and a rough inspection before concealed wiring is covered. These are project-inspection steps, not a resale endorsement.

For a seller: For surplus associated with a solar build, note whether the wire was unused, installed for future use, or removed; ask for permit/inspection status and as-built or product records if available. Do not describe an installed or uncertified reel as new PV-rated stock. Confirm who owns it and whether a project release is required before offering it.

BEFORE YOU SEND AN INVENTORY

AUSTIN LOT CHECKLIST

  • Sort utility primary, service triplex, grounding and PV-related wire by actual jacket and tag designations.
  • Document conductor metal, size, voltage class, insulation type and photos of intact or open reel ends.
  • Describe the lot's installed-versus-unused history and keep available listing or inspection records distinct from the reel itself.
  • State the exact storage address or ZIP and loading conditions; transaction and freight arrangements require a lot-specific offer.

We do not claim a local office, a relationship with the cited agencies, a purchase commitment or guaranteed pickup. Buying and freight terms require a review of the actual lot. Public project documents do not prove that a specific reel is compliant or available for sale.
