Identify a copper THHN/THWN-2 surplus reel by actual type and manufacturer dimensions.
Checkable specification fields
These are examples from the named references, not assertions about a reel you have not shown us. Match the actual jacket, tag and part number before using a product claim.
| Field | Documented example / boundary | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Documented product example | Southwire SPEC10000: copper conductor, PVC insulation, nylon sheath, 600 V; multiple type designations. | [1] |
| Temperature wording | Southwire states THHN dry 90°C; THWN-2 wet/dry 90°C, or 75°C when exposed to oil for this product. | [1] |
| 500 kcmil example | 37 strands; nominal conductor diameter 0.789 in; nominal copper 1,543 lb/1,000 ft versus 1,662 lb/1,000 ft total cable. | [1] |
| Listing evidence | UL says complete Listing Mark belongs on reel tag or smallest container; cable-surface UL print alone is supplemental. | [2] |
Use the table as a cross-check, not a lot certificate
Southwire publishes separate conductor diameter, outside diameter, copper mass and complete-cable mass columns. For 500 kcmil, the 1,543 lb copper number is not the shipping weight of the insulated reel. Match the maker, type and size first; strand pattern and dimensions may differ across constructions.
- Record the printed manufacturer, THHN/THWN-2 text, AWG or kcmil, conductor color and readable sequence marks.
- Photograph both flanges and the full reel tag; note if the outer wrap is cut or the print is interrupted.
- State the footage method: readable start/end marks, measurement, tag-only figure, or seller estimate.
Separate identity from present condition
A factory specification describes a product as made, not a surplus reel after storage or handling. Report visible scrapes, flattening, corrosion, open ends and missing labels as observations. Do not claim testing or current listing from a photo.
- Include a photo of a safely disconnected end if material or strand count is disputed.
- Use a current exact-product spec sheet; flag an unmatched manufacturer record as unverified.
Source notes and scope
The linked references support the specific examples above. Product designs and standards can change; seller-supplied markings, measured length and current condition require separate verification. Nothing here states that this buyer stocks, tests, guarantees or accepts a particular cable, or offers installation advice.
